The Evo-C designed by Jasper Morrison for Vitra in 2020 is the most recent addition to the to the exclusive list of cantilevered chairs. While cantilevered designs have been available from the 1920s, there are only a handful of examples executed in plastics due to the engineering challenges inherent in these designs. In fact, Morrison attributed the success of the design to ‘nine parts engineering to one part Design.’ Morrison was inspired by the early cantilevered designs produced using tubular steel together with the one-piece Panton design developed by Vira in the 1960s, introducing a minimalist aesthetic to the design executed in polypropylene. Perfecting the design required ‘several hundred iterations of a 3d computer drawing. The changes were partly aesthetic but mostly they were down to adjusting the sections and material thicknesses to have the right combination of strength and flexibility.’ according to Morrison. Gas injection molding technology allowed a load-bearing structure to be created from hollow tube-like components, mimicking the tubular steel construction of the earlier designs. Like most successful cantilevered designs, the chair offers sufficient spring to enhance comfort. The Evo-C is available in ivory, light mint, and poppy red.
