Note:
To produce the Smatrix Kartell had to develop a new injection moulding technique to enable polycarbonate to be used in a complex and finely detailed mould. While the technology used to produce the chair is innovative the inspiration for the design has its roots in 1950s steel wire chairs. The weave effect of the seat, mimicking the wire chairs was achieved with two overlapping layers (each about 4 mm thick) to create the 3D effect. The Matrix is available with painted or chrome-plated steel legs, and in stainless steel with oak-stained wood finish in the outdoor and rocking versions.
