Claimed as a more sustainable addition to the popular ‘About a Chair’ seating collection from Hay, this version failed to score well in my comparison of sustainable designs. This chair scored well for choice of materials for the shell although the base is made from wood, meaning it has to be separated at the end of its life. However, end-of-life prospects remain well rated, as the shell and base are fully recyclable. The chair does not stack, is heavy (at over 7 kgs) and only available in 3 colours (although a range of colour pads are available) with 2 variants of the design available. In 2023, the choice of colours was increased to 16, slightly increasing the below average score awarded to the design.
Hee Welling (b 1974) is a Danish designer based in Copenhagen. Welling studied at the University of Art and Design, Helsinki, and has a master degree in furniture design from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He established his studio in Copenhagen in 2003 and works today in the fields of furniture, interior, lighting and industrial design.
