An update on the AI chair developed by Kartell in 2019 to explore the potential of AI as a design tool. Phillipe Starck has again been engaged to update the original version. It is significantly lighter (only 3kg) than the original, delivering on the initial aim of the project to be material efficient. The lite version is available in a choice of seven colours. At around $400 it can hardly be described as cheap, still failing to deliver on the democratisation of design principles espoused by Starck. The design still only achieved an average score in my comparison of more sustainable designs, as Kartell use a technopolymer that cannot be recycled at the end of life and while the chairs can be stacked 4 units high, they are shipped in cartons containing just 2 chairs.
