Designed by APE for Netherlands based Zuiver in 2021 the Albert Kuip Coffee Chairs is billed as ‘the most sustainable [chair] so far’ but its performance in my analysis failed to match the marketing bump. In fact, the design achieved a below average score. The shell is made from used coffee beans but mixed with nearly 60% virgin polypropylene, giving a more score for material choice as this compound will not decompose and cannot be recycled. The base is made from painted ash. The product then needs to be dismantled at end-of-life and the shell cannot be reprocessed. The indoor chair is available in one configuration with only one colour choice and cannot be stacked (but is shipped disassembled in cartons of 2 units).
