Designed by a Spanish team of Alberto Lievore, Jeannette Altherr, and Manel Molina for the Italian manufacturer Arper in 2024. This is a more sustainable version of the Catifa Carta, launched in 2001. The shell is made from 29 sheets of craft paper bonded with a natural resin. The shell can be recycled at end of life by pyrolysis to turn it in to biochar. A range of cushions are available, made from repurposed leather padded with polyurethane. Despite these impressive credentials a below average score was awarded in my comparison of more sustainable designs. Although a range of configurations are available, the base and shell (only available in one colour) needs to be separated to enable the shell to be recycled. In 2025 another version was launched: ‘Catifa 46 is reinterpreted with a shell made using 100% recycled plastic, sourced from a blend of post-consumer and post-industrial waste. With this new material come a fresh texture and color palette, inspired by sustainable architecture: materials that are exposed, authentic, and naturally textured, adding depth and warmth to the shell.’
