Danish firm ScanCom manufacture the DuraOcean using recycled plastics with the ‘majority’ of the 3.5 kg used for the shell PP sourced from fishing nets and ‘other salvaged plastic debris’ (the chair is also available in a version using recycled household plastics). DuraOcean achieved a below average score in my comparison of plastic chairs developed with sustainability in mind. The use of wooden legs (Brazilian Eucalyptus) means the chair must be dismantled at the end of life before it can be treated. The design cannot be stacked or dismantled to reduced transport impacts, which will be higher than average in any event as the chair weighs nearly 5 kgs. DuraOcean is available in only one style with three colour choices, resulting in a below average score.
