Designed by Netherlands based The New Raw and released in 2021, the Emmis Chari is made from post production waste collected onsite while manufacturing other products. The chair was awarded an average score in my comparison of sustainable designs, as it is heavy and expensive and must be shipped individually fully assembled. The manufacturer claims, ‘The monolithic seat of the “Ermis” Chair follows simple and ergonomic lines and is robotically crafted with a single spiral plastic thread that follows the geometry. The layer orientation constantly follows the geometry of the chair via a slight rotation. As a result, the chair is strong with minimal material usage. At the same time, this approach creates a graphic texture on its surface.’ But at 9kg, the chair weighs over twice the average of the 60 chairs included in my analysis, challenging the claim to have minimised material use. The New Raw specialises in crafting plastic waste with robots.
