Note:
The Garden Egg chair was designed to create a comfortable outdoor chair that would always offer a dry cushion to enjoy, even after heavy rain. The search for a technical solution then guided the development of the form, rather than starting with the much admired shape. A panel in the top can be flipped open to form the back of the chair, revealing a hollow which forms the seat and arms. The back and seat of the chair are padded and upholstered to provide comfort. Designed at the height of the Cold War the Garden Egg chair is often erroneously attributed to East Germany, but it was a western invention – although its creator had fled from the East. Confusion over the design’s origin stems from the fact most of the original Garden Egg chairs were manufactured in East Germany. Prototypes were developed in the West but production proved expensive as the moulded polyurethane shells were hand lacquered.
