Note:
Marcel Wanders (1963- ) shot to international fame in the world of design following the release of the Knotted chair, in 1996. The combination of high-tech materials, traditional crafts and low tech production methods demanded attention for this transparent, featherweight (less than 1.5kg), visually appealing, fishnet design. The Knotted chair started by using macramé knotting techniques to create a loose weaved fabric or lace from a yarn consisting of a carbon fibre core encapsulated with braided aramid cord, a strong, heat-resistant material used by the aerospace industry. The shaped knotted fabric is then soaked in epoxy resin and hung on a wooden frame to dry in warm air and stiffen, allowing gravity to determine the final shape of the chair. This ‘Tech Dry’ process enables the fabric to retain some flexibility for comfort. Cappellini manufactured a limited edition of 1000 chairs before ceasing production in 2011. Today the chair is still manufactured by Droog.
