The third design launched by S.CAB in 2020 differed in that it was not designed inhouse but by Studio Zetass (led by Marcello Ziliani). This design only achieved an average score in my comparison of chairs developed with sustainability in mind. The chair is made from two components meaning the base has to be separated from the shell before it can be recycled. The base is made from shell (not recycled stee) and the shell is made from a technopolymer containing 60% recycled content. As with the other two designs the manufacturer claims that his plastic can be recycled at the end of life. However, as it is made from mixed plastics it seems unlikely that the shell will actually be recycled when the time comes. Only one variant of the design is offered with three colour choices available.
Marcello Ziliani (b 1963) has a strong interest in sustainable design. From 2011 to 2023 he was the lecturer for the product design workshop held on the third year of the industrial design degree course at the University of San Marino. Starting in 2023, he has been teaching materials and production techniques for sustainability within the “Green Product Designer – product design and sustainability” course at the ITS Academy Machina Lonati.
