The Oto Chair was designed by Alessandro Stabile and Martinelli Venezia for One to One and launched in 2023. Otto arrives flat packed for self-assembly user with no need for screws or metal inserts. In contrast with flat packed furniture from a particularly well-known brand the Oto can be dismantled and reassembled with ease. Despite these exciting attributes this novel design achieved a disappointing score in my comparison of sustainable chairs. All parts are made using “ocean plastics” and just one mould. The plastic is sourced from Ogyre, who pay fisherman to re-claim plastic from the ocean – a rare example of real ocean plastic (and not ocean bound plastics) being used to make a product. However, the manufacturer only claims that a purchase contributes to the removal of just 0.5kg of plastic from the ocean. The origin and details of the remaining 2.5kg is unknown. The chair arrives in a recycled, and recyclable, pulp pack shipped directly from the manufacturer, further reducing distribution impacts. Despite these impressive credentials the Oto Chair only achieved an average ERPR score. The chair cannot be recycled at end of life and chairs are shipped individually. Only one standard variant is available but eight colour choices are available.
