The Peggy chair was designed (by Peggy Gou) to be easily made at home from collected plastic waste and requiring no tools, screws, staples or glue. In my analysis I reward dematerialisation, reducing the amount of material used results in less energy needed to create the material in the first place. Dematerialisation also delivers benefits throughout the life cycle of the product, as there is less material to heat and mould, less product to transport by weight and even less material to get rid of at the end of life. Although the score achieved in my analysis is is not outstanding it should be noted this chair was designed and manufactured in Bali using locally collected waste, which is plentiful. Transport efficiency, therefore, of less relevance as the product is made at or near its place of use. Also, as the product is designed to be made in areas affected by high levels of plastic pollution there is no need to minimise the material requirements – in fact the more waste used the better!
